Mandatory Documents for Driving
Original Driver’s License: A valid, current license from your home country.
EU/EEA Citizens: Your domestic license is sufficient.
Non-EU Citizens: You must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) with your original license. An official Italian translation of your license is sometimes accepted as an alternative.
International Driving Permit (IDP):
Acts as a multi-language translation of your license and is a legal requirement for most non-EU drivers (including the U.S., Canada, and Australia)
How to get it: You have to obtain this in your home country before departure (AAA in the U.S- usually it is a quick in person - less than an hour procedure- or it’s available online).
Passport or National ID: A valid identity document is required for all rentals.
Credit Card: Most rental agencies require a physical credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit. Debit cards are rarely accepted and often come with strict limitations. Don’t do cash deposit.
ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato)
Most Italian city centers (Milan, Florence, Rome, etc.) have ZTLs to reduce congestion and pollution. Entering these without authorization triggers an automatic fine (form €80 to €100) via camera.
The Sign/s: Look for awhite squaresign with a red circle (the "no vehicles" symbol). It usually lists specific hours of operation (e.g., 7:30–19:30). Here is another example
There are also electrical ones where they can be “live” for if the area is drivable or not. Here is an example.
Hotel Access: If your hotel is inside a ZTL, provide your license plate number to the front desk immediately upon arrival. they must register it with the local police to whitelist you for the duration of your stay.
GPS Warning: Standard GPS apps (Google Maps, Waze) are not always 100% accurate with real-time ZTL boundaries. Always prioritize physical road signs over your phone.
Autostrada Tolls (Pedaggio)
Most Italian highways (Autostrade) are toll roads. You generally pay based on the distance traveled.
Entry: When you enter the highway, drive through a lane marked with a white sign (often says Biglietto). Press the button and take the paper ticket. ***Do not use the yellow "Telepass" lanes unless your rental car specifically includes a Telepass transponder.
Exit: Insert your ticket into the machine at the exit booth. The screen will display the amount due.
Payment Lanes: Choose your lane based on how you want to pay:
White Sign (Cash/Coins): Look for a hand holding money or a machine icon. These accept Euro notes and coins.
Blue Sign (Cards): Marked "Carte." These accept major credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard). Usually, no PIN is required; you just insert the card and it processes instantly.
Yellow Sign (Telepass):Avoid these unless you have a transponder device in the car and you specifically activated it with your renter. If you accidentally enter one, do not reverse; press the red "Assistance" button for a manual receipt.

Essential Regulations & Tips
Licensing
You can often rent small sailboats (or motorboats up to 40hp) without a license, but larger yachts or bareboat charters typically require an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or a recognized equivalent.
Boat License Requirements is mandatory if the boat's engine exceeds 40.8 HP (30 kW) or if the vessel is longer than 24 meters.
Youth License (D1): A new "mini license" allows those aged 16+ to operate vessels up to 10 meters during the day within 6 miles of the shore (engine limits apply).
Mandatory Insurance: All motorized vessels, including those with small auxiliary engines, must have third-party liability insurance with valid papers physically on board.
Safety Equipment
Mandatory gear includes life jackets for everyone on board, a lifebelt with 30m of rope, a fire extinguisher, and signaling devices (flares/horns).
Speed & Distance
Most lakes require staying at least 300m from the shore (150m for motorless boats on some lakes) and observing speed limits, typically around 20–27 knots drops significantly to 5 knots at night.
Right of Way
Sailing boats and public transport (ferries) always have priority over motorboats.
Swimming Areas
It is strictly forbidden to enter marked swimming zones. Always keep at least 100m distance from divers' marker buoys.
**Water-skiing is only permitted from 8:00 AM to sunset and is banned near Isola Bella and other specific towns.
